Academic year

The academic calendar mostly consists of two semester (Two-semester system). Each semester is not less than 15 weeks. The summer session is scheduled to meet the requirements of each

  • 1st semester : August - December
  • 2nd Semester : January - May
  • Summer Session : May - July
Other educatonal systems; such as Trimester system, Quarter system, and Module system, for some programs may be managed.


Application Fee

All graduate international applicants will be required to pay 500.00 THB for an application fee. This requirement will begin to take effect for applicants who submit an application from September 1,2012 onward.



Duration of study

Duration of study, dating from the time of entry is as follows :

  • 3-8 academic years for a candidate holding a Bachelor's degree
  • 3-6 academic years for a candidate holding a Master's degree
  • 2-5 academic years, except Master of Arts Program in Human Rights and Master of Arts Programme in Population and Reproductive Health Research (1-3 years)
  • 1-3 academic years

Curriculum Structure

The program is divided into 2 plans, both focusing on research in order to develop academic and professional individuals :

Plan 1
Consists of only doing research for a dissertation. Additional non-credit subjects or academic activities are optional.

  • For students with a Master's degree, the dissertation must not less than 48 credits for the two-semester system
  • For students with a Bachelor's degree, the dissertation must not less than 48 credits for the two-semester system

Plan 2
Consists of coursework and research for a dissertation.

  • For students with a Master's degree, the dissertation must not less than 36 credits and the coursework must total less than 12 credits for the two-semester system.
  • For students with a Bachelor's degree, the dissertation must not less than 48 credits and the coursework must total not less than 24 credits for the two-semester system

The total credit load must not be less than 36 credits for the two-semester system. There are two plans for the Master's Degree Program.

Plan A

focuses on research and requires a thesis. Plan A is also divided into two options

  • Plan A(1) consists of only doing a thesis totaling not less than 36 credits.
  • Plan A(2) consists of coursework and a thesis. The thesis must not less than 12 credits and the coursework must total not less than 24 credits.

Plan B

Consists of coursework without doing a thesis; however, a thematic paper is required. The thematic paper must not less than 3 credits and must not exceed 8 credits.

The coursework load must not be less than 24 credits for the two-semester system.


Requirements for Graduation

Duration of study, dating from the time of entry is as follows :

  • Complete all course requirements of the particular program (for plan 2)
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00
  • Pass a Qualifying Examination
  • English competence standard and English competence assessment criteria of doctoral degree students All doctoral degree students must have :
    1. a TOEFL Paper-based score with a minimum of 500; or
    2. a TOEFL Computer-based score with a minimum of 173; or
    3. a TOEFL Internet-based score with a minimum of 61; or
    4. a TOEFL-ITP score with a minimum of 500, attained from a test are administered by one of the following institutes.
      1. The Language Center, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University; or
      2. A testing center approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University
    5. an IELTS score with a minimum of 5.
  • Complete a dissertation of original research work and successfully defend it
  • Have at least one article published or accepted for publication in an international journal
  • Complete all course requirements of the particular program.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.
  • Pass a Comprehensive Examination (for Plan B).
  • All Master's degree students (International Programs) must have ;
    1. a TOEFL Paper-based score with a minimum of 480; or
    2. a TOEFL Computer-based score with a minimum of 157; or
    3. a TOEFL Internet-based score with a minimum of 54; or
    4. a TOEFL-ITP score with a minimum of 470, whose tests are administered by the institutes as follows.
      1. The Language Center, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University;
      2. The testing centers that are approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University
    5. an IELTS score with a minimum of 4.5; or
    6. an MU-Test (Mahidol University Test) score, as administered by The Language Center, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University, with a minimum of 45.
  • Complete the thesis / thematic paper and success fully defend it.
  • Have at least one article published or accepted for publication in an international journal(for Plan A(1)).
  • Complete all course requirements of the particular program
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00
  • All diploma degree students, and higher diploma program students must achieve an MU-Test (Mahidol University Test) score with a minimum of 35.
