Each year graduate students at Mahidol University produced numbers of theses. Among these theses, there are many showing a high quality of research, being published in recognized national or international academic journals and/or acquiring patents. The use of research results has brought benefit and fame to the university. In order to promote the work of the these high quality theses and to be pay homage to the students and advisory committees, the Faculty of Graduate Studies thinks it is appropriate to offer awards for distinguished theses.

  1 Objectives
1)   to promote high quality theses
2)   to enhance the reputation of the relevant graduate programs
3)   to enhance the reputation of the students and thesis advisors
4)   to be used as data in promoting the educational standards of the Faculty of Graduate Studies
5)   to be a means for the selection of distinguished theses


  2 Criteria for Thesis Nominations
In order to be nominated the thesis must:
2.1  
present study done and written by a graduate student of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Mahidol University, graduating in the academic year 2006 and 2007
2.2  
be a master's degree thesis or doctoral degree thesis
2.3  
be written in English or Thai
2.4  
have carried out which research resulting in publication or acceptance for publication in recognized peer reviewed national or international academic journals and/or research that:
  a)   has acquired a patent
  b)   has been put into use
  c)   has potential application
  d)   has been presented at academic conferences


  3 Nomination Procedures
3.1   The nomination may be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by
  3.1.1  
All graduates of academic year 2006 and 2007. The work that have been awarded before cannot apply.
  3.1.2   Major advisers of those in 3.1.1
  3.1.3   Program Director of those in 3.1.1
 

However, the nomination has to be approved by people in 3.1.1,3.1.2 and 3.1.3.

3.2  
The nominee must designate one of the following disciplinary groups:

  a)  
Biological Science e.g. theses in
- Biological Science
- Pharmacy
- Pharmacology
- Toxicology
- Biopharmaceutical Sciences
- Environment and Resource
- Molecular Genetics
- Neurosciences
  b)  
Physical Science and Technology e.g. theses in
- Analytical Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Polymer
- Mathematics
- Biostatistics
- Physics
- Engineering
- Information Technology
  c)  
Health Science e.g. theses in
- Medical Science
- Public Health
- Nursing
- Medical Technology
- Dentistry
- Medical Social Sciences
- Medicine
- Food and Nutrition
  d)  
Humanities, Social Science and Education e.g. theses in
- Language
- Religion
- Public Administration
- Criminology Justice Administration
- Environment
- Ecology
- Social Development
- Folk Wisdom
- Demography
- Behavioral Sciences
- Educational Technology
- Administration Management
- Curriculum and Instruction
- Music
- Human Rights

  The committee have authority to recategorize into more appropriate category.

3.3   The nominee must submit the Distinguished Thesis Award application to the Faculty of Graduate Studies not later than October 15, 2008. Documentation to be submitted includes:
  a)  
six copies of the application form for the Distinguished Thesis Awards completed by the graduates (download form from http://www.grad.mahidol.ac.th)
  b)  
six copies of the thesis abstract
  c)  
one copy of the completed thesis (if the application form and documentation are not complete, the Faculty of Graduate Studies must disqualify the nomination)
3.4  
The graduates who pass the first round of selection must give an oral presentation at the MU Graduate Research Symposium in 4th week of January 2008

4.2   The Faculty of Graduate Studies will consider Distinguished Thesis Awards for the 4 Disciplinary Groups:
  1)   Biological Science
  2)   Physical Science and Technology
  3)   Health Science
  4)   Humanities, Social Science and Education
 

In considering the award each year, the Faculty of Graduate Studies reserves the right not to give the award to any group in which none of the nomination meet the evaluation criteria.

4.3   The judgment of the Faculty of Graduate Studies is final.


  5 Criteria for Selection
5.1  
be original, not duplicating previous theses, texts, or procedures
5.2   contain a clear hypothesis or thesis statement to be proved or disproved
5.3   use appropriate research methodology and instruments for finding evidence to test the hypothesis
5.4  
present research results corresponding to research work and show good command of the language and data in the presentation of the research
5.5   contain results possessing at least one of the following characteristics:
  a)  
generating a new theory or idea or disproving an old theory or making a significant contribution to an old theory
  b)  
establishing a new procedure or new research instruments, disproving old procedures or instruments, or adding to them in an essential point
  c)  
discovering procedures of production, invention, administration, and services that are beneficial to the discipline or the manufacture of new products or contributing significant adaptations or improvements to old procedures

5.6  
for a thesis passing the first round of selection, the Faculty of Graduate Studies will invite the thesis writer to give an oral presentation MU graduate Research Symposium. Graduates from International programs must give oral presentation in English and graduates from Thai programs can present either in Thai or English.
 
The Faculty of Graduate Studies will support travel expenses and materials to the extent of 1,000 Baht to thesis writer who passing the first round of the selection.

  6 Deadlines for Nominations for the Distinguished Thesis Awards
6.1   October 15, 2008:
Applications close
6.2   February, 2009:
The Faculty of Graduate Studies will invite the thesis writers passing the first round to give oral presentations of their work to the Selection Committee and others interested.
6.3   March, 2009:
Announcement of the result of the final selection.
