Gopal Krishna Siwakoti, PhD
A former prisoner of principle and a torture survivor, Dr. Siwakoti
was born in Nepal's remotest mountain village without access
to road, electricity, hospital and school. An icon of conscience-keeping
and commitment, he rejuvenated amnesty movement in the early
eighties; courageously fought against tyrannical panchayat system;
heinous atrocities during the decade-long armed conflict as
well as the dictatorial royal regime under exceptionally difficult
circumstances. The International Advisor of Hague Appeal for
Peace, his contribution in human rights and peace movement is
manifested in Nepal's ongoing successful peace process leading
to the historical election of the Constituent Assembly.
He is a dedicated scholar and a campaigner audaciously championing
the most challenging cause of transitional justice to confront
the past abuses and the culture of impunity.
He stands as a man of principle in the international arena too.
He has been an official delegate at various UN forums and also
has lectured on Transitional Justice and Forced Migration at
Columbia University; American University's Law College, New
York University, Oxford University, Open Society Institute and
various other international gatherings, including the recently
held Peoples SAARC in Colombo. His personal biography and scruples
have been radiated in a documentary titled "Glorious
Life" as a genuine recognition of his valor and conviction
towards safeguarding civil liberty. He has paved the way for
greater aspiration for the new generation of human rights movement
to advance larger freedom for common humanity without border.
