Due to a lack of study focusing on individual level occupational change,
the objectives of this study are to investigate the pattern of occupational change among
the working age population in the Kanchanaburi study area, Thailand and to describe
possible factors influencing the occupational change situation, such as individual
factors, and development policy. The sample consisted of 10,604 workers whose ages
were between 15-59 years. The study utilized panel data of Kanchanaburi
Demographic Surveillance Survey (KDSS). Data are on individuals and collected
from the same person in 2000 and 2004 KDSS (1st and 5th round, respectively).
Binomial logistic regression analysis was undertaken in the study.
Main results from the analysis of occupational change of population in
Kanchanaburi DSS indicate male workers have a higher chance of occupational
change than female workers. The higher age group of workers shows a lower
proportion of occupational change. Non-agricultural workers have a lower chance of
occupational change than agricultural workers. Participation in OTOP project or
Village fund is also found to relate to occupational change. Moreover, workers in an
urban/ semi-urban stratum show a higher chance of occupational change than workers
in other strata, obviously.
