TITLE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN THAILAND

ABSTRACT
The objectives of this research are to 1) study the demographic andsocioeconomic characteristics of persons with disabilities, 2) study factors relating tothe employment of person with disabilities, and 3) compare income between thepersons with disabilities and the persons without disabilities. This research isquantitative research using data from the Health and Welfare Survey 2002, of theNational Statistics Office. The population under study are persons with one type ofdisability, aged 15 years and over. Regarding age-sex structure of persons with disabilities, the majority of personswith disabilities are males (59.9%), aged 60 years and over (33.9%). The highestdisability rate is among those 60 years and over. The majority of persons withdisabilities are married (41.4%), and have completed a primary level of education(55.9%). The highest proportion of persons with disabilities is in the Northeast. Thereare more persons with disabilities living in rural areas than urban areas. Regarding types of disability, young people (15-24 years old) mainly haveintellectual or learning disabilities while working age persons and the older personshave physical and locomotive disabilities. For the 315,511 working persons with disabilities, the majority are own accountworkers (41.3%), engaged in the agricultural sector (58.6%). Persons with disabilitiesemployed by the private sector total 28.2%, and only 3.1% in the government sector.The logistic regression shows that sex, age, marital status, educational background,living place, disability type, and periods of disability affected the employment of thepersons with disabilities, with a statistical significance at the 0.01 level. The personswith hearing or communication disabilities and the persons who have been disabledfor 40–59 years have the highest probability of working. Regarding income inequality,it is found that persons with disabilities have much lower average monthly incomethan persons without disabilities.
