ABSTRACT
The objective of this study is to explore the relationship between personal and familial factors (sex, age, educational level, working status, residence, number of siblings, family characteristics, marital status of parents, father’s occupation, mother’s occupation, relationship with father and relationship with mother) and the expectations of Thai adolescents of parental role modeling. Data was drawn from The 1998 Survey of Thai Youth conducted by the Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University, collected during May to June 1998. The study population was 1,166 Thai adolescents , age 15-19 who were single , living with their parents in urban and rural areas. Results of the study indicate that more than half of the adolescents (53 %) expect parental role modeling, while more male than female adolescents expect parental role modeling. The results of chi-square test reveal that the variables which show statistically significant relationships with the expectation of parental role modeling for adolescents are sex, age, residence, number of siblings, relationship with father, and relationship with mother (p-value  0.05). Overall results from this study reveal that the expectation of Thai adolescents of parental role modeling are related to personal and familial factors. The role modeling of parents is important to child development. Therefore, parents ought to demonstate positive behavior and to model appropriate roles for adolescents, so as to inspire the young to do as their parents do.
