Mahidol University has its origins in the frist institute of higher education in Thailand, which was founded by King Chulalongkorn in 1889, as a medical school attached to Siriraj Hospital. The University was established in 1943 as the University of Medical

Sciences and was renamed Mahidol University in 1969. This name refers to Prince Mahidol of Songkla, father of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and widely considered to be the father of modern medicine and public health in Thailand. From this origin as a primarily medical institution, Mahidol University has rapidly developed with the addition of several faculties, institutes, colleges and academic centres covering a wide range of diverse fields.

In addition to providing study in a wide range of diverse fields through faculties such as the Faculty of Medicine (Siriraj Hospital and Ramathibodi Hospital), Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Medical Technology, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Science, Mahidol University also plays an important role in postgraduate education by producing accredited experts, researchers and administrators to support the development of Thailand in many fields of study. Mahidol University has 81 Ph.D programs, 178 Master's programs, 4 higher graduate diplomas and 7 graduate diplomas, more than 8,000 graduate students attend the faculties and research centers in Mahidol University, with more than 1,000 students at the Ph.D level.

To help ensure high quality administration and international standards, Mahidol University has assigned the Faculty of Graduate Studies to supervising, coordinating and assisting all graduate programs in Mahidol's campuses. The Faculty has initiated 4 one-stop services which are the Salaya Branch office, Siriraj Hospital, Faculty of Science andFaculty of Dentistry, for flexibility and efficiency in administration.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies aims to supervise, coordinate and support the Graduate programs of Mahidol University to help support high standards and quality. The target is to improve the graduate curricula and research to produce highly qualified researchers and students for recognition at the national and international level.
